Memes, Flight, and Heroes: An Indian flight attendant hid the passports of the American passengers on board a hijacked flightto save them from the hijackers. She died while shielding three children from a hail of bullets. Her name Never forget this Shero, her name was Neerja @standup911 5.25 am, September 5, 1986: The Pan Am 73 flight from Mumbai to Frankfurt landed at the Jinnah International Airport, Karachi, for an hour-long stopover. Four heavily-armed Palestinian men, belonging to the Abu Nidal Organisation, hijacked the aircraft carrying 360 passengers, many of them Americans. They grabbed Neerja, who was at the entrance to welcome the passengers, by her hair. Sensing danger, she conveyed the โ€œhijack codeโ€ over the intercom to the flightโ€™s cockpit crew. Soon, the cockpit crew โ€” pilot, co-pilot and flight engineer โ€” escaped through the cockpitโ€™s emergency hatch. Being the purser, Neerja became the head of the flight even though she had started flying only six months ago. For 17 hours, Neerja and other members of the crew did their best to take care of the passengers and calm them down. She protected the Americans on board, who were targeted by the hijackers, by hiding their passports under a seat. At 9.55 pm, when the flightโ€™s auxiliary power unit ran out of fuel, plunging the aircraft into darkness, the hijackers went on a shooting spree. Neerja and a passenger flung open two emergency doors, allowing many passengers to escape. While helping three children slide down the chute of the emergency exit, Neerja was hit by bullets. Though she was rescued by two of her colleagues, she died before any medical assistance could reach her. She was one of 23 casualties. Hero r-p @dilute_the_power bethechange standup911

Memes, Cynical, and Dish: Palestine Opens First Vegan Cafeteria Team Vegan Cafe 6 Cafe &lestaurant Ovegantakeover On the 10th October 2016, Palestineโ€™s first ever vegan cafeteria, Sudfeh, opened its doors for the first time. Located on the campus of Al Quds (Jerusalem) University, the cafeteria is not only the first of its kind in Palestine, but also in any university in the Arabic-speaking world. It was safe to say that the team was hopeful, but more than a little nervous, about how Sudfeh might be perceived and, importantly, whether people would come and eat there. In Palestine, veganism is little-known and the animal rights movement is in its infancy so the idea of a vegan cafeteria seemed somewhat radical when the project was first mooted. But the team behind the cafeteria, which is run as a joint not-for-profit initiative by the Palestinian Animal League (PAL) and Al Quds University, need not have worried. From its first day, Sudfeh has been full of happy customers; indeed, the success of the first week saw the kitchen completely selling out of food every day and having to up the food production to ensure that hungry customers could get their fill of healthy, nutritious, cruelty-free food ๐ŸŒฑ In its first month, Sudfeh has provided over 1,600 vegan meals to students on campus and the feedback has been hugely positive. Initially sceptical, students soon realised that the food served in Sudfeh is not only freshly prepared by talented chef, Anan, and his team, but that the dishes on offer are familiar Palestinian cuisine which many do not realise are vegan by default. For example, hummus, foul (beans), soups, stuffed vine leaves and (of course) falafel, are delicious dishes that form a large part of the Palestinian diet and have always been vegan. Add to this traditional favourites which can be โ€œveganisedโ€ very easily, such as maqluba (โ€œupside-down riceโ€) and the Sudfeh menu enticed initially cynical students and staff and kept them coming back. ๐ŸŒฑ veganpalestine palestineanimalleague freepalestine israel palestine vegan vegantakeover

Memes, The Voice, and Avocado: Think of others. How do you sleep at night? Your body is resting but your soul is troubled. I use writing to show you that I am a whole person. I know that between what is meant & not said & what is said but not meant, much of love is lost. While some people face more suffering than others, I will represent the oppressed, I will define myself on my own terms as the fluidity of the f*ckry continues to exist. It is not for anyone else to define yourself but you & a culture that loves you. Some days I am a black man, Some days I am an African man, Some days I am an African woman, Some days I am a Palestinian child, Or an animal trying to stop the unnecessary slaughter of life for capitalism. Some days I am a tree in a rainforest about to be destroyed, some days I am a native trying to stop a pipeline... when we work together we can achieve whatever. Some days I have no money & I am fighting against governmental cuts, as I need to feed my family. Some days I am a labourer in a coltan mine, or on an avocado plantation, somedays I imagine myself working in Barbados on the sugar plantations, picking tea in Sri Lanka, or rice in China. Some days I am from West Papua, or an aboriginal Australian forced into a concentration camp some call a reservation. Some days I am homeless on the streets of London, other days I am a woman who is a victim of sexual violence & police brutality. Everyday I am me, I wish that we could just all be one, just another member of the global human race, but you are reading this in English, my post colonial tongue appeals to you because I was educated in the Uk & have a western passport, because of the violence carried out by the colonisers who created borders. Yet those refugees in the camp in Calais, who only speak Arabic & not french don't matter to many, this is why you have to be the voice, of those silenced by the systems that benefit a few but destroy many others. Today I might be a sex slave in Romania or a tortured man in Guantanamo bay, tomorrow I might be a political prisoner in Angola... I will sleep better knowing that my life isn't just for me. chakabars
