South Korean delegates report that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is willing to begin negotiations with the United States in regards to their nuclear missile programs. In a statement released today by South Korean president Moon Jae-in, North Korea “clearly stated its willingness to denuclearize. It made it clear that it would have no reason to keep nuclear weapons if the military threat to the North was eliminated and its security granted.” This would be the first time that Kim Jong-un has indicated any willingness to discuss giving up nuclear weapons in return for guaranteed security from the United States. South Korean delegates also report the North would suspend their nuclear and missile tests while engaging in these theoretical ‘talks.’ ___ The statement delivered by South Korea does not indicate if the North would be stopping their nuclear missile programs anytime soon. President Trump reacted by calling this “possible progress” but warned that it may also be a “false hope.” President Moon’s national security adviser Chung Eui-yong said he will be delivering additional messages from Mr. Kim to the Trump administration that he cannot reveal to the public.
