Which is also why I like the push l've been seeing by trans folk that I've seen as a result of this 2077 nonsense to explicitly centre cyberpunk around the issues of bodily autonomy and the idea of changing the self. Sure, that was always an ASPECT of cyberpunk, but it wasn't much often the explicit focus outside of when you had "oo cybernetics bad" or something Right now, there are major, and exceptionally important questions being asked and fought over when it comes do the autonomy of the person to do what they want with their body and life, be it abortion, transition, immigration. So a refocusing to look at that, and how the current structures of power benefit from and support those conflicts, is far more relevant discussion than a generic anti-capitalist one that I see a lot of people Hot Take about cyberpunk with. The problem with cyberpunk is that it answered, or attempted to answer, the questions it had when we were still going through the Bill Wurtz Jingle- Japanese Economic Miracle and the Cold War, but that's not what issues plague us now, and it's not what issues have come up in the era of late capitalism. To be fair, cyberpunk literature basically
 did this to itself.
There was absolutely a time when cyberpunk
was a vital part of the literary counterculture
and had some important things to say, but
that time was about a decade spanning from
the late 1970s to the late 1980s.
By 1990 or so, the genre had largely said
everything it had to say, with nearly all of
 its prominent authors subsequently moving
on to other pastures - either developing
their work into early transhuman SF, or
 shifting gears to writing contemporary
 technothrillers as they recognised that
 cyberpunk's sci-fi elements were becoming
increasingly unnecessary for the kinds of
 stories they wanted to tell.
Most of what's been produced under the
cyberpunk banner since then has basically
been imitating the trappings of the genre's
 mid-to-late-1980s heyday, not only without
concern for the politics that motivated
 those trappings, but often deliberately
downplaying or removing them for the sake
 of marketability.
 That effort to
 justify the aesthetics without
 acknowledging the politics behind them
 is how we
 get from early cyberpunk's
"we should be suspicious of the ethos of
 technology-as-self-improvement because
it provides an avenue for that technology's
corporate masters to do an end-run aroundi
personal and bodily autonomy and literally
 own people piecemeal" to contemporary
 (i.e., aesthetic) cyberpunk's "prosthetics are
bad because they damage your soul".
 sj-flemings-writing
And I find that a really big damn shame,
because I personally really love cyberpunk
and I love the thematics of it, and I go
so far as to call several of my projects
 explicitly cyberpunk
And to me, thats why I think evolution
 in "punkish" subcultures is important.
Cyberpunk of Gibson should not be

 y'know? When you're rebelling against a
culture, the focus of your rebellion should
 shift as the culture shifts.
Which is also why I like the push l've been
seeing by trans folk that I've seen as a
result of this 2077 nonsense to explicitly
centre cyberpunk around the issues of
bodily autonomy and the idea of changing
the self. Sure, that was always an ASPECT
of cyberpunk, but it wasn't much often the
explicit focus outside of when you had "oo
 cybernetics bad" or something
Right now, there are major, and exceptionally
important questions being asked and fought
over when it comes do the autonomy of
the person to do what they want with their
body and life, be it abortion, transition,
immigration. So a refocusing to look at that,
and how the current structures of power
benefit from and support those conflicts, is
far more relevant discussion than a generic
anti-capitalist one that I see a lot of people
 Hot Take about cyberpunk with.
The problem with cyberpunk is that it
answered, or attempted to answer, the
questions it had when we were still going
through the Bill Wurtz Jingle- Japanese
Economic Miracle and the Cold War, but
that's not what issues plague us now, and
it's not what issues have come up in the era
 of late capitalism.
