Dimensional: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: Bruce Lee Was My Friend, and Tarantino's Movie Disrespects Him 8:08 AM PDT 8/16/2019 by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Alamy Stock Photo Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Bruce Lee during the filming of 1978's 'Game of Death.' solacekames: 8:08 AM PDT 8/16/2019 by Kareem Abdul-JabbarThe NBA great and Hollywood Reporter columnist, a friend of the late martial arts star, believes the filmmaker was sloppy, somewhat racist and shirked his responsibility to basic truth in ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.’Remember that time Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. kidney-punched a waiter for serving soggy croutons in his tomato soup? How about the time the Dalai Lama got wasted and spray-painted “Karma Is a Beach” on the Tibetan ambassador’s limo? Probably not, since they never happened. But they could happen if a filmmaker decides to write those scenes into his or her movie. And, even though we know the movie is fiction, those scenes will live on in our shared cultural conscience as impressions of those real people, thereby corrupting our memory of them built on their real-life actions. That’s why filmmakers have a responsibility when playing with people’s perceptions of admired historic people to maintain a basic truth about the content of their character. Quentin Tarantino’s portrayal of Bruce Lee in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood does not live up to this standard. Of course, Tarantino has the artistic right to portray Bruce any way he wants. But to do so in such a sloppy and somewhat racist way is a failure both as an artist and as a human being. This controversy has left me torn. Tarantino is one of my favorite filmmakers because he is so bold, uncompromising and unpredictable. There’s a giddy energy in his movies of someone who loves movies and wants you to love them, too. I attend each Tarantino film as if it were an event, knowing that his distillation of the ’60s and ’70s action movies will be much more entertaining than a simple homage. That’s what makes the Bruce Lee scenes so disappointing, not so much on a factual basis, but as a lapse of cultural awareness.Bruce Lee was my friend and teacher. That doesn’t give him a free pass for how he’s portrayed in movies. But it does give me some insight into the man. I first met Bruce when I was a student at UCLA looking to continue my martial arts studies, which I started in New York City. We quickly developed a friendship as well as a student-teacher relationship. He taught me the discipline and spirituality of martial arts, which was greatly responsible for me being able to play competitively in the NBA for 20 years with very few injuries.During our years of friendship, he spoke passionately about how frustrated he was with the stereotypical representation of Asians in film and TV. The only roles were for inscrutable villains or bowing servants. In Have Gun - Will Travel, Paladin’s faithful Chinese servant goes by the insulting name of “Hey Boy” (Kam Tong). He was replaced in season four by a female character referred to as “Hey Girl” (Lisa Lu). Asian men were portrayed as sexless accessories to a scene, while the women were subservient. This was how African-American men and women were generally portrayed until the advent of Sidney Poitier and blaxploitation films. Bruce was dedicated to changing the dismissive image of Asians through his acting, writing and promotion of Jeet Kune Do, his interpretation of martial arts. That’s why it disturbs me that Tarantino chose to portray Bruce in such a one-dimensional way. The John Wayne machismo attitude of Cliff (Brad Pitt), an aging stuntman who defeats the arrogant, uppity Chinese guy harks back to the very stereotypes Bruce was trying to dismantle. Of course the blond, white beefcake American can beat your fancy Asian chopsocky dude because that foreign crap doesn’t fly here.I might even go along with the skewered version of Bruce if that wasn’t the only significant scene with him, if we’d also seen a glimpse of his other traits, of his struggle to be taken seriously in Hollywood. Alas, he was just another Hey Boy prop to the scene. The scene is complicated by being presented as a flashback, but in a way that could suggest the stuntman’s memory is cartoonishly biased in his favor. Equally disturbing is the unresolved shadow that Cliff may have killed his wife with a spear gun because she nagged him. Classic Cliff. Is Cliff more heroic because he also doesn’t put up with outspoken women?I was in public with Bruce several times when some random jerk would loudly challenge Bruce to a fight. He always politely declined and moved on. First rule of Bruce’s fight club was don’t fight — unless there is no other option. He felt no need to prove himself. He knew who he was and that the real fight wasn’t on the mat, it was on the screen in creating opportunities for Asians to be seen as more than grinning stereotypes. Unfortunately, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood prefers the good old ways.

Dimensional: gaming: Indie Game Spotlight: Untitled Goose Game  Oh, boy, do we have an extra super horrible Indie Game Spotlight exclusive for you today! We’re talking, of course, of Untitled Goose Game, a slapstick simulator, where you play a goose hassling a town full of people who would very much like you to stop hassling them, please. It feels a bit like playing the videogame version of an old cartoon, complete with reactive soundtrack. Everything that happens in the game is very low stakes (the goose doesn’t get involved in political scandals, or drive a car off a ramp etc.), but there’s a lot of room for comedic performance in doing things like stealing clothes off a washing line and dumping them in a pond. The team at House House shares roles a lot, and so the game was predominantly designed collaboratively by four people. We chatted with Stuart Gillespie-Cook, who mostly works on animation. Also within House House is Jake Strasser, largely responsible for the design of levels and environments, Nico Disseldorp who does all the programming, and Michael McMaster who mostly works on art direction and UI. The iconic sound effects were made by Em Halberstadt, and Dan Golding designed the music. There’s also art from Kalonica Quigley and additional UI programming from Cherie Davidson. Stuart Gave us the lowdown on the curious title, the game mechanics, and dream crossovers. Read on! What’s the story behind the title of the game? This more or less happened by accident; at first, we just needed something to put on a video we were submitting to a festival. It’s become one of the best things about the game, and I’m so glad we stuck with it. I will say it’s a weird thing to explain when your very not-online hairdresser asks you “oh, what game are you working on?”  How did the team come up with the animation style? The whole visual style of the game is designed to be nice and clean, very readable and approachable. The animation specifically takes a lot of inspiration from slapstick and pantomime—with big, over the top reactions that are impossible to miss. We wanted to squeeze as much emotion as possible out of these people without facial expressions, so everything has to be evoked with body language. We also lean heavily on two dimensional, hand-drawn effects that are lifted from comics—lines to represent the direction of a honk, stars when someone hits their thumb with a hammer, etc. Untitled Goose Game offers a unique take on the puzzle genre. What other mechanics can we expect? Because it’s a game that’s largely about interacting with a bunch of people, the game borrows heavily from AI systems in stealth games. Playing with a character’s awareness of where the goose is, where they left their stuff, where that sound came from etc. is a big part of the comedy of the game. So, while it’s less restrictive than most stealth games, and there’s no real fail state (ie. if a character sees a goose, they’ll think “ah, there’s a goose” rather than “I’d better shoot and kill that spy”), those explicit behaviours that are so present in the stealth genre are really important in our goose game. If you could have the goose cross over into any cinematic or game universe, what would it be and why? It would be nice to see the goose chase Postman Pat over a hedgerow. That era of British children’s television has been a huge influence on the game. Otherwise, we’re always open to having the goose in Smash. Are you ready to fulfill your wildest dreams of becoming a mischevious goose and harassing people? Of course you are! What’s the story behind the title of the game?
This more or less happened by accident; at first, we just needed something to put on a video we were submitting to a festival. It’s become one of the best things about the game, and I’m so glad we stuck with it. I will say it’s a weird thing to explain when your very not-online hairdresser asks you “oh, what game are you working on?”
How did the team come up with the animation style?
The whole visual style of the game is designed to be nice and clean, very readable and approachable. The animation specifically takes a lot of inspiration from slapstick and pantomime—with big, over the top reactions that are impossible to miss. We wanted to squeeze as much emotion as possible out of these people without facial expressions, so everything has to be evoked with body language.
And instead of saying that Jane and Thor broke up in interviews, a line that does not spoil literally anything about the film, Feige chose to attack Jane’s strength and capability, which would have been a very special dig at Portman.  Do you want to know what none of this sounds like? Feige implies that A) Valkyrie was in Ragnorak just to be a romantic interest for Thor, B) Valkyrie is better and more powerful than Jane Foster, and C) Jane Foster was always Thor’s inferior.
What’s ridiculous is that Ragnorak had a “sorry Jane dumped you” throwaway line to explain Portman’s absence. Do you want to know what none of this sounds like? Taika Waititi’s opinion. Waititi is a master storyteller who does not sacrifice his feminist views for laughs. You can bet that Feige’s ridiculous slams on Portman and her character Jane– disguised as “promotion” for WAITITI’S FILM– would have troubled him immensely. This is a man with a Māori father, who had to use his mother’s maiden name– Cohen– for earlier work because an indigenous last name kept him away from opportunity. This man does NOT fuck around with entertainment that gets its power off of sexism and inequality. He knows from experience just how infuriating it is when it comes to directors missing out on opportunities because they aren’t a white man.
So how does he fix this? How does he fix the idea that Jane Foster can’t go to space, or that she’s not powerful enough for Thor, the god of thunder?
He makes her Thor.
Waititi saw Portman / Jane Foster’s name dragged through the mud by Kevin Feige in order to promote his movie, and when he got hired to direct again, he decided to right those wrongs. This picture means everything. He is on his knee, handing her Thor’s hammer, essentially saying, you will never have to go through that shit with me. With me, you’re a god. And the expression on her face, after Marvel attempted to break her, doesn’t need words.

Seeing as The Dark World also took place in space, this answer didn’t have a lot of credibility. When Portman said she was “done” with the Marvel Universe, Feige got vicious in interviews, telling reporters that Valkyrie was in Ragnorak to be better than Jane Foster and a better match for Thor.
“We wanted Thor to encounter somebody that was near his equal and that his relationship with Jane may have evolved in unexpected ways in between The Dark World and Ragnarok, and we wanted to pit him against a character who was much more his equal and in many ways his superior.” (x)
Feige implies that A) Valkyrie was in Ragnorak to be a romantic interest for Thor, B) Valkyrie is better and more powerful than Jane Foster, and C) Jane Foster was always Thor’s inferior.
What’s ridiculous is that Ragnorak had a “sorry Jane dumped you” throwaway line to explain Portman’s absence. Dimensional: Drawing Tips from the Art of Animation Not that names really mater, but I consider myself an "illustrator." and up until my last couple of years of college, I approached art from a very "traditional" mindset, however it was the things I've learned form studding animation and concept art that helped me transition from making work that was meant to be readable to making work that was meant to be beautiful and meaningful. Here are a few tips that helped me: Drawing with Three-Dimensional Shapes Drawing from life or photo reference is an excellent way to progress as an artist, but you learn a lot more from it if you really understand what your seeing and make conscious choices about what you put on the page as opposed to just being slave to the reference. When you break your subject down into shapes or masses you can wrap your head around it from all dimensions and understand why what you're seeing looks the way it does The key to this is not to think in two dimensions but in three. This is the reason a lot of figure drawing books have people made out of a bunch of cylinders and spheres near the beginning. If you can break something down from simple three-dimensional shapes then you can draw it from every angle! "the helpful human figure images used here are from posemaniacks.com This puts you in the driver's seat and lets you take the information you want from the reference and edit and stylize to your hearts content! This is when design come in! Straights, Curves, and Asymmetry It's a principal that becomes especially apparent when posing a figure that symmetry can be very boring and feel unnatural, that is why contrapposto was such a big deal; it's amazing what just tipping the angle of the hips and shoulders can do! But this idea is not only good for the over all pose, it also applies to all the smaller shapes in your figure! One of the best ways to get an elegant, life filled drawing is to use an offset straight lines against curvy ones. () D IS 1) The pose adds some straights and curves on its own, but That's better much more elegant! the limbs look a little like sausage links. Proportion When you first started drawing the figure you probably learned the "proportions of the body" people are six to eight heads tall, the legs are about half the length of the body etc. I still think that this is a good place to start, you need to know the rules before you can break 'em, but I'll give you a hint: no one actually looks like that and it would be super boring if the did. Having variation of size makes a drawing much more interesting! Equal distances are pretty boring. Try mixing it up! It also helps to play with shapes There are a lot more great design tips and tricks out there, but this is some stuff that's helped me most. I hope it can help you a little too! Dimensional: mindandbodyholly: Music and belly dancing costumes are an essential part of the art. Belly dancing music is diverse although it mainly involves Middle Eastern pop, Hindi music and traditional Said rhythms, among others. The colorful belly dancing costumes are made of several pieces of clothing, veils, coins and scarves. These costumes come in different types including the Bedleh, Gallabiya and Beledi. Bedleh is a cabaret-style set that is made up of a bra, beaded skirt, belt, body stocking and a lot of beads and glitter. The beledi dress is a long floor-length dress. The dress is made from natural fibers like cotton to give the dancer a folkloric look. The gallabiya is a full-length robe or dress made from cotton. This robe or dress is worn by both men and women in Egypt and some parts of Middle East. The gallabiya is mainly used by belly dancers to cover/wrap themselves before or after the dance.  The website www.pennyforyourshimmy.com offers a more in-depth look at traditional costumes.Belly dancing costumes differ depending on place or style of dancing. For instance, Egyptian and Turkish costumes are very different. Egyptian costumes lead in glitter, glitz and glamour. The costumes are visible from a distance and they boost and show the dancer’s movements quite well. And just like Egyptian monuments, these costumes are made to last. The bras and belts are fully-beaded, sequined and stiffened with heavy-duty buckram. Their fabric is covered with beaded fringe, beads, stones and fringed appliqués, in some cases. Egyptian belly dancing costumes are made to withstand pressure, hard use and perspiration. Over the last 20 years, the length and quantity of beaded fringe has changed from long and plentiful to short. The skirts come in different widths and lengths, but they still remain classy. Due to the toughness and extreme glitz in Egyptian costumes, it is very difficult to alter the costumes. They may also be uncomfortable to wear at times. The costumes weigh a lot. Also, they don’t bend easily when dancing and they are likely to scratch the dancers. The basic bra cup of Egyptian costumes comes in few styles and sizes. Egyptian belts come in one piece which has a side fastening. However, you can get tailored alterations if you know your way around. The style of dance in Egypt doesn’t allow the dancers to expose much skin. The dancers wear a netting or stocking over their midriff to cover the exposed skin.Turkish belly dancing costumes are light, flexible, shimmering and supple. Their construction is simple and the bras and belts often have wired frames under the fabric to allow the dancer to adjust or alter them into different interesting shapes. The sequins and beadwork in Turkish costumes have sculptural effects such as 3-dimensional designs in butterfly, floral or star patterns. The sequins are placed on each other in such a way that they attain some iridescence. The fringes are made in different bead colors, sizes and lengths to complete the shimmering costume. Turkish belly dancing costumes are comfortable, easy to alter and they come with several accessories such as foot coverings, necklets, headbands and hand pieces. However, they have one main problem. They are very fragile and they don’t last long. Also, for the costumes to be effective, the dancers must be close to the audience. Unlike Egyptian costumes, Turkish costumes allow dancers to reveal more skin. In fact, the more the skin, the better the dance. Although both Egyptian and Turkish costumes are beaded, Turkish dancers wear their belts higher up near their waists. Their skirts have long slits that extend all the way up to the belt to expose thighs and more skin. The dance technique is also very different. The Egyptian dance style has precise movements where the dancer’s hips are held beneath the rib cage. On the other hand, the Turkish style tilts the upper torso backwards to push the pelvis forward. Also, floorwork is common in Turkish style but it is not considered fashionable in Egyptian style. For people interested in more information on belly dancing costumes, http://www.pennyforyourshimmy.com/belly-dancing-costumes/ has some great links and information.
