Update: Senate Dems call Betsy DeVos “incompetent,” an “amateur” during all-night talk-a-thonBecause the talk-a-thon happened while most of America slept, here are some of the best moments from the all-night session.Al Franken: “During her hearing, Ms. DeVos proved beyond a shadow of a doubt not only that her ideology is fundamentally incompatible with the mission of the Department of Education, but that she is fundamentally incompetent to be its leader.”Elizabeth Warren: It is difficult to imagine a worse choice to head the Department of Education … [DeVos] demonstrated to the entire world she is embarrassingly unprepared.“Kamala Harris: She went on to say, ‘Well, but we need guns in schools, yes, because grizzly bears may pose a significant threat to the safety of our children and perhaps their education. I say Ms. DeVos poses a far greater threat to public education.”Chuck Schumer: “She is the least qualified nominee in a historically unqualified cabinet.“ Read more

I’m glad they’re finally doing something useful because they’ve been so fucking soft and meek. Republicans have been taking what the fuck they want and using all their power to do so.

Baller Alert, Finance, and Memes: President Obama Seeks to Secure $1 Billion for Schools with Low- Income Students @baller alert President Obama Seeks to Secure $1 Billion for Schools with Low-Income Students – blogged by @MsJennyb ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ As inauguration day draws closer, the Obama administration is looking to implement a last-minute policy that could finance schools with large numbers of low-income students. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ According to CNN, the policy, written by the Department of Education, could force several school districts to limit-cut spending at well-financed elementary and secondary schools to be able to transfer about $1 billion dollars to schools with a large amount of students from low-income families. The policy is currently under review by the White House budget office. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ However, it has stirred up a a lot of trouble among Republican lawmakers and school administrators who are against the new potential policy, claiming it to be “unnecessary” and “unwarranted federal overreach.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Source say the policy was first brought up in September, but since the election, the department has rushed to adopt the policy, in light of DonaldTrump’s forthcoming presidency. If it is done by Friday at noon, there is nothing the Trump administration can do, unless Congress overturns it, reports state. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “If this were to be finalized, it would be a huge deal because it’s saying how local and state money inside school districts is to be distrubuted acorss schools,” a school-finance expert at Georgetown University said. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Additionally, the policy has the ability to “significantly improve achievement for students,” in low income schools, as a former Education Department official, Scott Sargrad states. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “This is the federal government explicitly saying poor students need to have at least the same resources as their higher-income counterparts. That’s a significant step for the federal government to say that,” Sargrad said. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ At this time, the regulation is still under review.

Bad, Complex, and New York: crackerhell How A Middle-School Principal Persuaded Students To Come To School by David Kestenbaum Shawn Rux took over as principal of MS 53, a New York City middle school, last year. At the time, 50 or 60 kids were absent every day. You could understand why they stayed away: The school was chaos Twenty-two teachers had quit, the entire office staff had quit, and hundreds of kids had been suspended. The school was given a grade of F from the city's department of education "It was in a bad place," Rux says Rux decided he needed to create incentives for kids to come to school Incentives that were more obvious to middle-school kids than, "If you come to school you'll be better off 20 years from now." He handed out raffle tickets to anyone who showed up to school on time One of the prizes was an Xbox. And he threw in an element of randomness: The first kids in line when the doors opened might get 20 tickets It worked. Kids started showing up early "It was. like, 'Get out of my way, I'm trying to get into school,' Rux says. "t was nice." Rux also created his own currency. He called it Rux Bux. Teachers hand them out when kids are well behaved. They can be traded in for school supplies, or special lunches. A sixth-grader named Wander Rodriguez is trying to save up 5,000 Rux Bux-enough for a personal shopping spree with Rux. The principal also stands outside school every morning, greeting the students as they show up. This recognition is another, subtler incentive to come to school "I like this school," Wander Rodriguez says. "They treat me like home they treat me nice, they always give me stuff.... They always say 'hi in the mornings." The school went from an F to a C. Daily attendance went up to over 90 percent. Then the hurricane hit. The school is in Far Rockaway, Queens-one of the areas hardest hit by the storm. Some kids' homes were destroyed. One student who stayed at home through the storm told a teacher, "My apartment complex was in the middle of the ocean." Rux's car was destroyed. The first floor of his house was flooded After the storm, after school started up again, Rux's goal was to get attendance back to 90 percent. Every day, his staff texts him the attendance numbers. The day I visited last week, 89.2 percent of students attended school. Close, but not close enough for Rux. The storm has been tough on everyone, he says. But that's no excuse Kids have to be in school No one will ever know his name. Lets change that.omg-humor.tumblr.com

How A Middle-School Principal Persuaded Students To Come To
School
by David Kestenbaum
Shawn Rux took over as principal of MS 53, a New York City middle
school, last year. At the time, 50 or 60 kids were absent every day. You
could understand why they stayed away: The school was chaos
Twenty-two teachers had quit, the entire office staff had quit, and
hundreds of kids had been suspended. The school was given a grade of
F from the city's department of education
"It was in a bad place," Rux says
Rux decided he needed to create incentives for kids to come to school
Incentives that were more obvious to middle-school kids than, "If you
come to school you'll be better off 20 years from now."
He handed out raffle tickets to anyone who showed up to school on time
One of the prizes was an Xbox. And he threw in an element of
randomness: The first kids in line when the doors opened might get 20
tickets
It worked. Kids started showing up early
"It was. like, 'Get out of my way, I'm trying to get into school,' Rux
says. "t was nice."
Rux also created his own currency. He called it Rux Bux. Teachers hand
them out when kids are well behaved. They can be traded in for school
supplies, or special lunches. A sixth-grader named Wander Rodriguez is
trying to save up 5,000 Rux Bux-enough for a personal shopping
spree with Rux.
The principal also stands outside school every morning, greeting the
students as they show up. This recognition is another, subtler incentive
to come to school
"I like this school," Wander Rodriguez says. "They treat me like home
they treat me nice, they always give me stuff.... They always say 'hi in
the mornings."
The school went from an F to a C. Daily attendance went up to over 90
percent. Then the hurricane hit.
The school is in Far Rockaway, Queens-one of the areas hardest hit
by the storm. Some kids' homes were destroyed. One student who
stayed at home through the storm told a teacher, "My apartment complex
was in the middle of the ocean." Rux's car was destroyed. The first floor
of his house was flooded
After the storm, after school started up again, Rux's goal was to get
attendance back to 90 percent. Every day, his staff texts him the
attendance numbers. The day I visited last week, 89.2 percent of
students attended school. Close, but not close enough for Rux.
The storm has been tough on everyone, he says. But that's no excuse

Anyways, the reason I had to study the case was because within months of this ‘speculation” there was a massive spike in women who had breast implants in hospitals with Lupus-like symptoms. But, those things were glossed over in favor of creating a public issue. Within months, Oprah had caused a mini epidemic of psychosomatic Lupus in women with implants. It went from 2 cases to over 10,000 mind you, in months.
