Finance, Memes, and Native American: Seattle votes to divest billions of dollars from Wells Fargo over Dakota Access pipeline STA UP STAND WATE ANDING FARC nOCK L HEATH DAPI @seekthe truth Fayne W Inhabitat.com- Seattle could pull billions of dollars out of its longtime bank because of its role in the construction of the Dakota Access oil pipeline DAPL. On Wednesday, a Seattle City Council committee voted unanimously to divest nearly $3 billion of the city’s funds from Wells Fargo, one of 17 financial institutions involved in financing the contentious project. Although the bill still has to undergo a procedural vote by the full council on Tuesday, it is “widely expected to pass,” activist Shaun King wrote in the Daily News. During the hearing, councilwoman Debora Juarez said that committee members all agreed that divestment was the city’s “goal.” Should the legislation push through, Seattle will not renew its contract with WellsFargo when it expires in 2018. Neither will the city be allowed to make new investments with the bank for three years. The proposal would be a major victory for the pipeline’s opponents, who returned to the site of last year’s monthslong protests at StandingRock after President Donald Trump ordered the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to expedite the completion of the 1,000-mile-long oil pipeline. “You faced down attack dogs, blizzards and rubber bullets,” councilwoman Kshama Sawant, who co-sponsored the bill, told a crowd on Wednesday, referring to the thousands of Native Americans and activists who faced off with law enforcement during last year’s standoff. “If we do not fight we will not win. Let’s build on this, make sure other cities move to divest from Wells Fargo,” she added. NoDAPL

Memes, Native American, and Malia Obama: Malia Obama Spotted at Protest for Dakota Access Plpeline balleralert Malia Obama Spotted at Protest for DakotaAccessPipeline-blogged by @thereal__bee ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Former first daughter MaliaObama is definitely down for the cause as she was spotted protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline ( DAPL) on Monday. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ A group of about 100 people have been protesting in Park City, Utah. When her father, BarackObama, was in office he ordered a "temporary stop" in December to cease construction on the pipeline, which is designed to go through the Standing Rock Indian Reservation and lands held sacred by local Native Americans. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ There is also proof that the construction of the pipeline could lead to contaminated water for the reservation. Protesters have continued to protest at Standing Rock since August 2016. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Since President DonaldTrump took office, the pipeline is expected to continue as planned. Trump did sign an executive order on Tuesday to resume construction. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In addition to protesting, Malia also attended a private event with the chairman of the StandingRock Sioux, Dave Archambault. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Actress and activist ShaileneWoodley spotted Malia at the event and said, "It was amazing to see Malia. I saw her last night when we did the event with Chairman Dave Archambault. And it was incredible to see her there."
