There is also the misconception that brains have gotten progressively larger through evolution. But in fact brain size varies a lot, as you can see, and does not recapitulate evolutionary history. Brain size is not even well correlated with variations in body size. The brain of a pygmy shrew weighs about 0.060 g, while that of a blue whale weighs close to 7 kg. For comparison, the brain of a mouse - the smallest brain in the image above - weighs about 0.5 g, and our brains weigh more or less 1-1.5 kg. Yet proportional to body size, the pygmy shrew has the “bigger” brain. Conversely, the thickness of the cerebral cortex, the outer convoluted layer of the hemispheres where much of the brain’s “computing power” lies, varies very little between different mammals.
