Butt, Comfortable, and Memes: Don't forget my first pattern with Simplicity Patterns #8286 is out! Its designed to be used with mostly non stretch material, but can be used with all stretch. In this photo. The red material is completely NON STRETCH and the grey is a heavy matte spandex. I strongly suggest doing a mockup to get a great fit to your body, since non stretch, is well... non stretch, it will require tweaking to the pattern. The pattern can also be used with all stretch fabrics.

A couple of questions people asked:

1. Is this pattern for Short torso girls with padded bras (ie my body type)

ANSWER: it can be, but when I gave my pattern to simplicity I told them to develop it on their standard body pattern sizes. So If I used this commercial pattern myself, I would have to shorten everything (like I always have to). The arms run big. There is a small error In the pattern, the spandex area around the elbow is meant to be angle to be more comfortable when you bend your elbow, So the seam doesn't cut straight across it (did that in one of the mock ups, it sucked). Simplicity probably mistook my angle, that I meant it to be a straight line. There is a small spandex area in the butt, that is ONLY if you make the full suit, it gives you the ability to sit.. something a few of you have heard me talk about with my black cat outfit :) If you are making just the leotard, you can omit it.

2. Why does the seam with the spandex just not go down the outside leg.

ANSWER: in one of my prelim mock ups, I had tried that but it looks very unflattering on the thigh as the stretch wasn't even shape down the leg. Also hiding the stretch on the inside of the leg allows you to showcase more of your cool nonstretch fabric, and it hides the non stretch a little better, thats what I used in my Squirrel girl, the whole leg is non stretch with only stretch on the inside.

3. Why do the seams not go straight down the torso

ANSWER: the lines I put into the costume help give a faux hourglass shape and again help maximize your non straight fabric usage, but can you shift it around once you have the mockup done.

4. Why have a seam down the front and back?

ANSWER: you can put the zipper in the front of the back and then just remove the seam from the other side. This pattern does have a lot of pieces but many of them can be merged to have less seams. Just wanted to start with a lot of seams so you have more ability to tailor it to fit you better. Then you can start omitting and changing the lines to suit whatever project but you will have something design to fit YOU.
