Lawyer, Memes, and New York: A Defender of the Constitution, With No Legal Right to Live Here Lizbeth Mateo in her office in a day laborer center in Pasadena. Ms. Mateo, now a lawyer, was born in Mexico and has lived in the United States for years as an undocumented immigrant. EMILY BERL FOR THE NEW YORK TIMES Last month, Ms. Mateo was officially sworn in as a lawyer, taking an oath to uphold the United States Constitution. After years of flaunting her status as undocumented and openly defying immigration law, she is now part of the legal system and hopes to represent clients who, like her, entered the United States illegally. LOS ANGELES โ€” She spends her days preparing legal strategies to help undocumented immigrants stay in the country. But at any moment, Lizbeth Mateo could be picked up for deportation herself. She is an immigration lawyer with her own immigration lawyer. Last month, Ms. Mateo was officially sworn in as a lawyer, taking an oath to uphold the United States Constitution. After years of flaunting her status as undocumented and openly defying immigration law, she is now part of the legal system and hopes to represent clients who, like her, entered the United States illegally. Allowing undocumented immigrants to work as lawyers is a sign of just how far the acceptance of such immigrants has come in places like California. When Kevin de Leรณn, the leader of the California State Senate, presided over Ms. Mateoโ€™s swearing-in ceremony, he called her the embodiment of the American dream. But Ms. Mateo is setting out to practice law in a new era: President Trump, whose vows to seal off the border with a wall energized supporters, has made clear that all undocumented immigrants could be deported. Some immigrants have responded by going into hiding while others prepare to return home. Source: NY Times

All Lives Matter, Arguing, and Black Lives Matter: *me on a first date* So black lives matter or all lives matter? โ˜๐Ÿพโ˜๐Ÿฝโ˜๐Ÿผโ˜๐Ÿฟ Repost from our friend @thewayofwilson: "If you really know me... You know I would say thisโœŠ๐ŸพโœŠ๐Ÿพ BlackLivesMatter To be honest, the fact that Black people had to create an entire movement to acknowledge that their humanity MATTERS is troubling and extremely disheartening. BlackLivesMatter is not stating that anybody's lives matter less or that Black lives matter more, it's truly just recognizing that in the society we live in, Black people are often seen as less than human (for a multitude of reasons) and thus treated inhumanely. Additionally, for people who say "all lives matter" as a response to BlackLivesMatter... Do you respond that way at a Breast Cancer event? Do you say "all cancers matter" or do you recognize that this event is highlighting Breast Cancer? How about at an event focused on the issue of Economic Oppression, do you say "all oppression matters" or do you recognize that this event is highlighting Economic Oppression? It's unbelievable that when Black people want to acknowledge the fact that their lives have VALUE, people truly feel the need to argue and invalidate that fact."
